Advisory Board Meeting in Bogotá, Colombia April 19 th – 21 st , 2006
The First Meeting of the newly created Advisory Board of the Inter-American Program on Education for Democratic Values and Practices was held in Bogotá , Colombia on April 19-21, 2006 . As technical secretariat for the Inter-American Program, the OAS General Secretariat, through the Department of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and the Department for the Promotion of Governance, jointly organized and facilitated the event. The Inter-American Committee on Education, the Ministry of Education of Colombia and the Center for Civic Education provided financial and logistical support. The approximately 35 members of the Advisory Board that attended the event also provided in-kind support and participated without honorarium.
The objectives of the meeting, to organize the Advisory Board and to compile its recommendations for the Inter-American Program's work plan and initial activities, were successfully accomplished during two and a half days of deliberations. A participatory methodology was used to plan and conduct the meeting, which resulted in an enthusiastic and informative exchange of ideas, recommendations and proposals. The specific recommendations of the Advisory Board reflected the diversity of its members, ranging from ministries of education to universities, international and nongovernmental organizations, and the media from throughout the sub regions of the hemisphere.
Among the results of the meeting was the establishment of three thematic working groups on (1) research and analysis, (2) professional development and educational resources, and (3) information exchange and dialogue. The specific recommendations, which include the creation of a web portal and scholarly journal, will be detailed in the report of the meeting which will be finalized through an online forum and posted here. These recommendations will be used by the technical secretariat to design the Inter-American Program's work plan and budget in consultation with the Advisory Board and a group of country members of the Inter-American Committee on Education.
As part of the first activities of the Inter-American Program, during early July, the Secretariat of Public Education of Mexico will host a seminar to exchange good practices.
